HIFIMAN ANANDA Nano

Le Hifiman Ananda Nano sono indiscutibilmente delle cuffie di alta qualità ma prima di un eventuale acquisto bisogna tenere in considerazione degli aspetti fondamentali. Il primo è che hanno bisogno di un amplificatore per cuffie "vero", quindi collegandole alle uscite della scheda audio (per non parlare di uno smartphone) non riusciranno a dare il massimo della loro performance, anzi andranno ad esaltare quelli che potremmo considerare come dei difetti del loro carattere timbrico. Indipendentemente dai gusti personali le ho trovate infatti fin troppo aperte sulle medio alte/alte frequenze; un tipo di timbrica che potrebbe allontanare parecchi utenti. Sia chiaro che la qualità di emissione è senz'altro elevata ed esente da distorsioni. Le avevo acquistate per fare i check di mix e mastering ma proprio per questa loro caratteristica timbrica, non sono riuscito ad usarle come un accessorio di riferimento. Per il resto c'è poco da dire perché le basse frequenze sono ottime, pulite, veloci, così come il reparto delle medie frequenze (che ad un primo ascolto possono sembrare indietro ma solo per il suo "spingere" in avanti le alte). Per concludere, si tratta senza dubbio di un oggetto di qualità, a patto di conoscere e di apprezzare le sue caratteristiche che a molti potrebbero anche piacere molto. Io le ho restituite, optando per il modello Edition XV che sulla carta dovrebbe avere maggior equilibrio e che testerò non appena arriveranno.

I recently picked up the Hifiman Ananda Nano after watching Paul Third’s in-depth review on his YouTube channel, where he praised these headphones as the fastest and most detailed pair he’s tried. Paul describes them as having an incredibly fast transient response thanks to their ultra-thin, nanometer-thick diaphragm. The result is clear and punchy lows and precise differentiation between bass and kick – a lifesaver for mixing genres that demand tight low-end control.

In my experience so far, these headphones are a dream when it comes to catching details, particularly in the midrange, as Paul highlighted. You can really hear every nuance in vocal clicks or sibilance, making it easy to tweak compression and EQ to perfection. However, as Paul warned, the Ananda Nanos can be almost “too” revealing in the center channel, which can tempt you into over-processing certain elements. But that’s a good problem to have – if you can get the low-end balance right on these, it will translate well on other systems.

Paul also mentioned his experience comparing these to other high-end headphones like the Audeze MX4 and HD1000 SE, and he stands by the Ananda Nano for its sheer speed and clarity at a fraction of the cost. I've felt the same; these outperform expectations in terms of clarity and tightness, especially when checking low-end levels after mixing on speakers.

Compared to my previous pair of Bayerdynamic DT 1990 PRO, Ananda is a clear winner. It feels like you unlock another dimension of musical perception. Listening to low-end of my previous tracks I can hear that DT1990's just made a non-musical mush.

Overall, these headphones are well-built, surprisingly durable, and worth every penny for anyone serious about detailed mixing and clean low-end.

The HiFiMan Ananda Nano headphones deliver an impressive listening experience, with punchy, impactful sound that makes every note feel dynamic and engaging. The headphones excel in clarity, rendering transients with precision and bringing out the subtleties in complex tracks. This makes them a great choice for both professional monitoring and immersive listening.

While the sound quality is outstanding, the side panels have a somewhat budget appearance, which doesn’t quite match the premium audio performance. However, this minor design flaw is easily overlooked once you’re immersed in the exceptional sound quality these headphones provide.

Absolute top-notch build quality, even down to the included cable. Excellent bass and transient reproduction, good imaging depth. Wipes the floor with my old AKG Q701's. I was shocked when A/B-ing them how muddy and indistinct the Q701's sounded by comparison.

Also easy enough to power with the built-in headphone amp on my MOTU 828. I never really need to take the gain above -10dB, so there's plenty of headroom to work with. Sadly I don't have a high-end headphone amp to compare against, so I can't comment on distortion other than to say I don't perceive any.

The big negative is that these things have way too much treble out of the box. To match the Harman EQ curve I needed to cut 8dB(!) above 10kHz. Without EQ they're both fatiguing to use and untrustworthy for mixing because of this.

The rest of the spectrum is fine, though - they don't need more than about 2dB of boosting or cutting anywhere else. They take EQ well, and once corrected to the Harman curve, they make a great mixing tool. I have extremely good monitor speakers but my room acoustic treatment is limited, so these are really handy for checking low-end and imaging without the influence of the room. Glad I forked out for them.
