Audeze MM-500

After more than two years of use, and after convincing a colleague to buy the exact same headphones based on my recommendation, I can say this with absolute confidence: the sound is phenomenal. Truly exceptional.

Unfortunately, that is the only positive thing I have to say.

These are, without exaggeration, the most fragile and poorly built pieces of audio equipment I have ever owned. Out of five units, four failed — and not due to abuse, but due to shockingly bad construction. One unit fell from roughly 30 cm onto its side and the left speaker literally burst. Two others had loose screws, allowing a speaker to simply detach and fall off by itself. Another unit arrived already damaged straight out of the box.

As for the unit I am reviewing now: it was sent back to Thomann. After five months of silence from Audeze, Thomann gave up waiting and replaced it with a new unit themselves. At least someone in this chain understands what customer support means.

Audeze, this is embarrassing. Your quality control appears to be nonexistent, your RMA process is a joke, and the overall build quality is indefensible at this price point. I have purchased cheap, no-name products online that were built better than this.

Frankly, it is shameful that Manny Marroquin allowed his name to be associated with a product with such disastrous reliability. Incredible sound cannot excuse incompetence at this level.

Une première écoute mitigée..
Le casque offre une belle écoute et un super confort mais au vue de l’engouement et du prix, je m’attendais à mieux.
J’ai donc fait un rodage d’environ 40 heures et une écoute de mes titres références.
Et là quelle claque, on ressent toute la dynamique et l’énergie avec une précision chirurgicale. L’espace stéréo est incroyable.
Un game changer pour mixer mes tracks avec précision.

Die Audeze MM-500 sind keine Kopfhörer zum Nebenbei-Hören – sie sind Werkzeuge für ernsthaftes Arbeiten mit Klang. Der Sound ist radikal ehrlich, unglaublich detailliert und direkt. Kein Schönfärben, kein Vordrücken von Frequenzen, einfach nur: Wahrheit.
Genau das, was man im Studio braucht, halt nur zum Aufsetzen. Wer audiophilen Blender-Sound sucht, ist hier falsch (Hat mich beim ersten Hören "entäuschend" kalt gelassen aber gleihczeitig auch nicht :-D). Wer echten Sound will, genau so wie er ist – der wird hier fündig.

Der Bass? Absolut da – aber nicht übertrieben. Wer eine künstlich aufgepumpte Tieftonwand erwartet, wird enttäuscht. Stattdessen bekommt man kontrollierten, tiefreichenden und präzisen Bass, der das Gesamtbild stützt, ohne sich in den Vordergrund zu drängen. Und das ist genau richtig so – denn gerade beim Mixing zählt Klarheit mehr als Wow-Effekt. Gleiches gilt für das gesamte Frequenzspektrum.

Design: Die MM-500 sehen verdammt edel aus. Das matte Finish, das solide Metallgehäuse, die klaren Linien – alles wirkt durchdacht, hochwertig und professionell. In der Hand fühlen sie sich schwer, aber nicht klobig an. Man merkt sofort: Das ist kein Lifestyle-Kopfhörer, sondern ein echtes Arbeitsgerät – mit einem Luxus-Anspruch.

Cons:
Kabel könnten ein wenig stabiler wirken.
Bei langen Sessions merkt man doch das Gewicht - aber im Rahmen.
Offene Bauweise ( gleichzeitig Pro-Argument) benötigt idealerweise absolute Umgebungsstille.


Fazit:
Die Audeze MM-500 bieten eine beeindruckend präzise Klangdarstellung, besonders im Studio- und Mixing-Kontext. Sie sind ein ernstzunehmendes Werkzeug, das aber mit Kompromissen kommt: hoher Preis, hohes Gewicht, eingeschränkter Komfort. Wer damit leben kann und gezielt nach einer neutralen Klangreferenz sucht, bekommt hier ein starkes Stück Technik – ohne Schnickschnack, aber auch ohne große Begeisterung beim Hören abseits des Studios.
