Useful for a quick change and protecting the bridge, not so much for keeping in tune
The tie is useful to fix the strings to the bridge if you don't want to waste time (or you don't have time, like a quick change) in making the node. Also, it offers a protection to the bridge from the string end.
On the negative side, each tie tend to rotate a little as the string gets tension; those rotations affect the tuning.
