How it is a standard is beyond me
As a pro drummer, I have tried so many different microphones, both high-end and low-end, and the SM57 has been the worst (or almost) I have ever used on snare. I have tried to love it, unsuccessfully. It is well built and that is about the only thing I like about it. I sold it and will never own one again. It sounds that bad, and how it became a staple is beyond me.
