Shure KSM 141 SL

STUDIO
These have to be one of my favorite go-to small diaphragm condenser mics. Using two 141s as a stereo pair for drum overheads works a real treat handling the high end extremely well, while at the same time retaining a natural and transparent sound across the full spectrum of frequencies. I have made great use of it in the studio on wind instruments, specifically tin whistle, classical flute and clarinet as a mid distance mic but works just as well as a near mic depending on the instrument. Bright stringed instruments shine really well using the 141 and I have had great results recording mandolin, steel string guitar and nylon guitar.

LIVE
In live situations the Shure KSM141 handles extremely and is really at home handling acoustic instruments while its rugged design also helps it fit right in on the road or on or out on location. During a live performance of a large acoustic ensemble I miced a fiddle and flute with 141s and the separation and control they gave me was outstanding and never once had any unexpected feedback issues or unwelcome surprises.

FEATURES
The selectable polar pattern option gives great flexibility with a cardioid and omni pattern option, while the low cut filter and gain level switches helps it adapts into a huge range of stage and studio uses. Using two 141s as a stereo pair also work great as room or ambient mics.

CONCLUSION
Considering the features, sound quality, design and adaptability of the Shure KSM141 in my opinion the value for money is quiet good given the amount of applications and use it will see during what I hope to be its long life with me in the studio and also for live situations.

Ich habe das KSM141 bestellt, da ich gerade nach guten Kleinmembranern mit geringem Rauschen und vielseitiger Einsetzbarkeit suchte. Das Feature, via Mechanik von Niere auf Kugel zu schalten, wirkte doch rechtvielversprechend.
Klangmäßig klingt es doch recht Höhenbetont, wenngleich nichts zu harsch wird. Ich testete es gegen RODE NT5, SLATE ML2, OKTAVA MC012, SE8 und Neumann KM184/KM84. Das Ergebnis war definitiv irgendwo zwischen Rode und Neumann.
Der Fakt, dass es mechanisch umschaltbar ist, kam für mich jedoch nicht als Vorteil heraus:
Immerwieder musste ich kontrollieren, ob denn die gewollte Richtcharakteristik auch stimmte, da durch z.B. drehen des Mikrofons theoretisch der Ring sich verstellen könnte oder beim Aufbau vielleicht von Anfang an falsch eingestellt war.
Bei Mikrofonen mit Wechselkapsel kann man dies mit einem Blick in den Mikrofonkoffer oder sogar beim Betrachten der Schlitze (Omnikapsel hat bei Rode, SE und Neumann keine Öffnungen an den Seiten) herausfinden.

Ich habe mir das KSM als Ergänzung für mein Neumann Arsenal gekauft, da das U87 in einigen Bereichen doch zu empfindlich und nicht geeignet ist. Als Erstes verwendete ich es für Studioaufnahmen von vier Konzert-Toms in Kombination mit einem Stereopaar KM 184, das Shure al Center Mikro im Kugel-Modus und die Neumänner als L-R, das Resultat ist fantastisch, das Shure bildet alle Frequenzen unverfärbt ab, hat einen runden Bass, rauscht null und ist angenehm unempfindlich bei sehr lauten Transienten. Als Niere funktioniert es eben so hervorragend, wie ich bei Nahaufnahmen von leisen Perkussionsinstrumenten wie z.B. Klangschalen feststellen konnte. Ein wirklich sehr empfehlenswertes Mikrofon!
