Neve 88C

Als überkritischer Käufer habe ich mir echt lange Zeit gelassen für den Kauf eines passenden Kompressors für mein Audiointerface NEVE 88m. Das lange Nachdenken konnte ich genau in dem Augenblick beenden, als der NEVE 88c Kompressor auf der NAMM 2025 erschien. Ich habe sofort bestellt und mich zweimal über den geänderten Liefertermin geärgert ;-)
Dann kam letzte Woche der 88c endlich und seitdem bin ich wie von den Socken, was das Teil an Sounds herauskitzelt. Sorry, aber der 88c ist nicht nur ein einfacher Kompressor! Ich höre Details in der Aufnahme, die ich am Vollröhrenverstärker klar wahrnehme aber so nie allein, über den Instrumenteneingang eines Audiointerfaces eingespielt, hören konnte (und ich habe einige Audiointerfaces durchprobiert).
Beim 88m habe ich noch einen Stern abgezogen, weil ich den Preis ein wenig hoch fand. Der 88c ist jeden Cent wert, eines der geilsten Geräte fürs Homestudio von ambitionierten Hobbymusikern der letzten Jahre. Endlich haben Leute mal nachgedacht worauf es wirklich ankommt => auf geile Technik! Ohne wenn und aber, keine Abofallen etc.

Je ne me permettrais pas d'émettre des critiques négatives sur cet appareil. Bravo aux ingénieurs qui mettent ça au point. J'adore l'audace de sortir un format portable aussi unique, fiable et polyvalent.
Niveau son c'est sans surprise excellent. On reconnait clairement la signature NEVE.
Que ce soit en enregistrement, mixage ou mastering, on peut clairement tout faire. Je l'adore sur une prise de son basse en DI, ou il peut encaisser de forts niveau de réduction tout en restant bien propre.
Le mode limiter sur un master ou un groupe est excellent. L'attaque fixée à 5ms est un excellent choix, plus efficace pour les voix, percussions, guitares etc... Et le mode attaque rapide est impressionnant. Ca ne laisse effectivement rien passer.
Compression en série, dual mono, stéréo, limiteur, cet appareil est bluffant de flexibilité.
Je trouve au final le rapport qualité prix excellent pour un compresseur 2 canaux de cette qualité de fabrication et surtout, fait à la main en Angleterre. On peut faire tellement de choses différentes avec, c'est clairement le plus utile de mon modeste parc analogique.

a dead LED on the CH1 input ladder makes me wonder how such a device passed QC.... waiting for replacement.
Replacement arrive without issues and after a few hours of having the compresssor on my voice over master bus I 'm quite impressed. It does what I need: squash peaks and the sidechain filtering are just what I needed. Thanks to the Thomann team for the fast & uncomplicated processing of my replacement device.

The Neve 88m has insert points, so I connect the Neve 88c to it—giving me a fantastic preamp followed immediately by an excellent compressor.
I can record signals from a microphone, guitar, Elektron Octatrack, etc.

Now I want to compress a few tracks in Logic Pro and what happens?
Nothing… because to do that, I have to disconnect the Neve 88c and hook it up to my SSL Alpha 8.

The Neve 88m and 88c were clearly designed to work together—as a high-end mobile setup—so how is it that I can’t mix tracks from my DAW using just these two units?
Well, I knew what I was buying, so I’m not complaining, but there’s definitely a slight bitter aftertaste.

How does it sound?
Well… how could Neve sound? Absolutely AMAZING!

Even if this compressor cost twice as much, it would still be worth it.
It glues tracks together beautifully, yet still manages to stay clean. I’ve never been able to get this kind of result from any plugin—only the Neve 88c delivers that.

Powered directly from my Mac Mini M4 via Thunderbolt 4, it runs flawlessly.

A magical box—for everything, and for many years to come.
