MOTU 10pre

I’ve been a loyal MOTU fan and user since 2012. Here is my honest take on this new interface:

Sound Quality: Absolutely amazing. The audio is crystal clear.

Preamps: They offer a massive 74dB of gain. It’s honestly more than most people will ever need, but it's great to have.

The Software & Routing: This interface gives you total control, but everything must be configured before first use. Unlike older MOTU models, you can no longer tweak the mixer directly from the device's screen. You absolutely need a computer or tablet to change your routing and configuration.

I like very much that you have the ability to install Cuemix Pro software and play with the configuration in a virtual environment, without having the actual card (it has three virtual cards 16A, 10pre and 848).

Out-of-the-box defects: My only major issue with MOTU is their quality control. This unit arrived with a faulty channel and had to be replaced immediately. Shockingly, this has happened with every single MOTU interface I have purchased in the past.Verdict: Once it works, it is an incredible piece of gear. However, be prepared for potential shipping returns due to recurring initial defects.

Ich war erstaunt, dass es auf Anhieb deutlich besser und trsansparenter klang als mein MOTU 828es. Da hat sich in der Zwischenzeit wirklich etwas getan, erst recht im Vergleich mit meinem noch älteren Focusrite Saffire40 – nichts gegen Focusrite. Die Produktfamilie kennt ja drei Varianten mit unterschiedlichen Anschlüssen. Diese Version mit 10 XLR/Combo-Eingängen ist für mein Projektstudio ideal. ich verwende es an einem Mac Mini M4Pro mit 64GB RAM und 14+4 Kernen und erziele laut Logic Pro bei 48 kHz/24Bit einen Roundtrip von 3,6 ms und ausgangsseitig 1,9 ms bei 64 Samples Puffergröße. Man kann auf 2,2/1,2 ms heruntergehen, wenn man mit 32 Samples auskommt. Damit kann man Projekte mit vielen Plug-Ins aber schon an Grenzen bringen. Für mich ist entscheidend, dass das Interface das derzeit latenzärmste ist und sich automatisch selbst korrekt einstellt. Ich ziehe den Direktanschluss meiner Neumann TLM103 irgendwelchen anderen zwischengeschalteten Preamps vor.
Die Bedienung erfolgt über die CueMix-Pro-Software. An dieser ist nichts auszusetzen, außer dass die Signalführung mit AVB-Streams eine gewisse Lernkurve mitbringt und nicht immer intuitiv ist. Mit Chat GPT und etwas Herumprobieren habe ich mein altes MOTU 828es erfolgreich über AVB verbunden, und dort noch über ADAT ein Behringer ADA8000 dran, was nur gelegentlich für hochpegelige Line-Signale eines Modularsynthesizers benötigt wird. Das Display des 10Pro ist hell und schnell.
Das ist ein beeindruckend schweres und sehr solides 19"-Trumm. An der Verarbeitung gibt es rein gar nichts auszusetzen.
