Active pickups in electric guitars: this is where opinions differ. But even sceptics have to admit one thing: the EMG pickups sound fantastic and that without any ambient noise, and the long list of prominent users (including David Gilmour, Steve Lukather and Kirk Hammett from Metallica) simply speaks for itself!

EMG also has something to offer for friends of 7-string guitars. The EMG 707 is based on the EMG 85, which is modelled on the legendary PAF and, thanks to its Alnico magnets, produces exactly that legendary, warm singing sound.

Solid 7 string sound

I bought two of these pickups to install in my Ibanez RGA7 - yes, in both the NECK and the BRIDGE position.

There's no tone control installed - only single volume pot.

The reason is that I want a) consistent levels, b) consistent sound that's only altered by the physical position of the pickup, not by it's inherent characteristics determined by wiring.

This allows me to use both pickups for either rhythm or solo work, depending on the mood of the song (although I prefer bridge for rhythm and neck for solos).

In that respect, the 707s perform with honors, sound is heavy but not muddled, bright but not telecasterish.

But, as with any pickup, the overall sound will depend on your guitar - the guy I bought the RGA7 from has 707 installed in a S-series Ibanez and the two guitars sound differently.

Your mileage, and experience, may and WILL vary, but if you're looking for a solid heavy 7-string sound, 707s will not disappoint.

What the hell could I possibly say that's not been said before? It's an EMG! For a 7-string! On the Lead Channel: Your Guitar will decapitate the front row with its sheer brutality. On the Clean Channel: If you roll back that volume on your Guitar...what you'll hear is Honey being spread on Toast in the morning by Tory Lane. Then everything in between. For reference: I use a B/Tone Alder Body 7-string.

A bit dull sounding compared to the 81

Well made and quiet performance however flat and dull compared to an 81-7, wouldn't recommend for modern scooped tones.

Ein MUSS für Siebensaiter!

Seit einigen Jahren spiele ich fast nur noch siebensaitige Gitarren. Irgendwann kam ich auf die Idee, EMG 707 Pickups einzubauen. Viele meiner Lieblingsgitarristen, wie zum Beispiel Rusty Cooley, schwören auf diese Pickups - deshalb mussten die EMG's her. Ich muss sagen, der Unterschied ist unglaublich, selbst meine Instrumente überhalb der 1000-Euro-Grenze klingen durch diese Aufwertung um Welten besser.

Der Sound ist sehr kompakt, straff und definiert. Da ich einen Halb- bis Ganzton nach unten stimme, klang es mit den alten Pickups oft matschig und unklar. Für die EMG's gar kein Problem! Trotz ihrer Klarheit liefern die Pickups Unmengen an Druck und Sustain. Mittlerweile habe ich alle meine Siebensaiter mit diesen Tonabnehmern ausgestattet. Es sind mit Abstand die besten, die ich je erlebt habe!
