Night and day
I have a Rogers Tower series 14x5 snare drum that for some unknown (initially) reason it wasn’t sounding right. It was coming out too harsh and thin to my ears and I honestly couldn’t tell why, as all the parts were original, including heads. So I made the decision to trust more on my intuition than on the factory and started changing everything to see where I could get it.
First it was the reso head. Although I had a brand new one installed, I’ve decided to change for a Remo ambassador hazy and that made a noticeable difference, but it wasn’t quite there. Then I changed the hoops: bought two 2.3mm Millenium triple flange hoops and installed on it, and it did help, but not quite there yet.
Then I decided to get these brass wires and man, just that completely changed the sound. It’s truly night and day and I was impressed by how a snare wire can make such an impact. It definitely took out the harshness I was getting from the original setup and now the snare is way more darker and mellow. So much that I’ll have to go back from the Ambassador X coated to a regular Ambassador on the batter side.
I totally recommend this if you’re trying to fix a harsh and thin snare sound!
