As a previous owner of a Heil Talkbox, I was curious to see if the MXR Talk Box stood up to its solid although more complicate counterpart (the Heil model requires an external amplifier + a cabinet if you want to bypass the effect + at least 1 speaker cable). The answer is: yes! The case is sturdy and compact, the sound is brilliant and cutting, the controls are easy to manipulate. Moreover: it significantly reduces the encumbrance and weight of my live equipment.
I tried it first with a guitar and then with a simple sawtooth synth sound on a microKorg to emulate Roger Troutman's sound and the results were fully satisfactory.
At first I was disappointed that the plastic tube was different than the Heil's; in particular, the diameter of the MXR's tube is smaller. This, however, proved to be a pro as it makes easier to pronounce consonants intelligibly.

Il Talk Box va alla grande, è esattamente il suono che cercavo suonando in un tributo ai Pink Floyd, però purtroppo il tubo mi è arrivato piegato in due punti perché forse avvolto male in fase di confezionamento e ovviamente le due strozzature influiscono sul volume. Inoltre sarebbe opportuno fornire anche qualche supporto per attaccare il tubo al microfono. Viene fornito solo quello per ancorarlo all'asta ma poi resta a penzoloni, io ho risolto con degli strep in velcro comunque.

Quality is good, sound is great fun! Just sounds like the real deal. If you want one because of Slash's talkbox sound heard in his Live era concerts....this is more or less the same flare and texture. Would be great if MXR gave you a cloth or something to clean the tube after the sound. Beware: this box need a microphone in order to amplify the sound. Otherwise, the sound is well audible as coming out of the box, but it's not coming out of your amplifier! So you either put a microphone in front of your mouth and amplify with a PA system, or the microphone goes in the audio card if you need the talkbox sound to be recorded (which is quite easy to do as the sound is grainy and present). The pipe that goes into the mouth could have some protection for your tongue and teeth, because at higher volumes i found it a bit hurting my mouth for the air pressure. Not a big deal, just saying....Anyway, good product, lots of fun!
